Introduction Global warming is one of the most pressing issues facing our planet today. It refers to the long-term rise in Earth's average temperature due to human activities, primarily the burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, and industrial processes. This increase in temperature is causing drastic changes in our climate, leading to extreme weather conditions, melting glaciers, rising sea levels, and disruptions in ecosystems. I circumnavigated Iceland on expedition as a Grosvenor Teacher Fellow in July 2017, not long after the announcement that the United States planned to withdraw from the Paris Agreement on climate change mitigation. Back home in the U.S. at that time, there was a lot of political debate about involvement in the agreement and the value of combating global warming at home. Meanwhile in Iceland, I came face to face with the effects of global warming as we visited spectacular landscapes threatened by the warming climate.
Major contributors to global warming include:
- Burning Fossil Fuels – Coal, oil, and natural gas are burned for energy, releasing vast amounts of CO₂.
- Deforestation – Trees absorb CO₂, and when forests are cut down, this carbon is released back into the atmosphere.
- Industrial Activities – Factories emit large quantities of GHGs during production processes.
- Agriculture – Livestock farming produces methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
- Transportation – Vehicles powered by gasoline and diesel release CO₂ into the air.
Effects of Global Warming
The impact of global warming is already visible across the globe, affecting both nature and human societies.Some major consequences include:
- Rising Temperatures – The Earth’s average temperature has increased significantly over the past century.
- Extreme Weather – More frequent and severe hurricanes, droughts, heatwaves, and heavy rainfall.
- Melting Ice Caps and Rising Sea Levels – Glaciers are melting, causing sea levels to rise and threatening coastal cities.
- Loss of Biodiversity – Many species are struggling to adapt to rapid climate changes, leading to extinctions.
- Food and Water Shortages – Changing climate patterns disrupt agriculture and water supply.
Solutions to Global Warming
Although the challenges are significant, solutions exist to mitigate the effects of global warming and protect our planet.Steps we can take:
- Switch to Renewable Energy – Solar, wind, and hydroelectric power produce energy without emitting CO₂.
- Reduce Deforestation – Protecting forests helps absorb carbon and maintain ecosystems.
- Adopt Sustainable Agriculture – Using organic farming methods and reducing meat consumption can lower emissions.
- Enhance Energy Efficiency – Using energy-efficient appliances, LED bulbs, and insulation reduces energy waste.
- Promote Eco-Friendly Transportation – Walking, cycling, carpooling, and using electric vehicles can help cut emissions.
- Support Climate Policies – Advocating for government policies that limit carbon emissions and invest in clean energy is crucial.
